Lore

The sun sat on the horizon, a perfect semicircle, casting enchanting oranges and reds across fluffy clouds. Caius, the Kitsune of Twilight, stood on a stone outlook watching as his Festival of Eternal Twilight danced on beneath him. The Festival had been a great success so far, for which he could allow himself a breath of relief and a smile.Though, something felt wrong. He glanced upwards and saw a ripple forming in the universe, just above him. He summoned his shimmering polearm to his side and stood ready to face the unknown force arriving at the Festival. From the ripple emerged a purifying and comforting aura: one which he hadn’t felt for centuries. He dispelled his weapon and dropped to a knee and bowed his head.“Yozora! To what do I owe the pleasure?” Caius had not expected the Guardian of the Night Sky to appear at his festival.Yozora called Caius back to his feet. Yozora began to regale Caius about his time as the Kitsune of Twilight and offered him something more. Caius had felt trapped by his limits of light and dark, of day and night. “It has been decided that you will have the opportunity to go beyond, far from where you are now. Will you accept?”Caius’ head was spinning. The offer was surreal. Caius looked into the unending abyss of Yozora’s eyes. “I am ready.” Caius flew up to Yozora and steeled himself. Yozora offered their hand out to Caius, and once he took it, bright yellow and dark blue bubbles began seeping from him. The bubbles coalesced into a single brilliant orb, the encapsulation of Twilight. Yozora dispelled it away, and looked back to Caius.“With your strength anew, you shall become a symbol far beyond power,” Yozora stated. “You will be the shining beacon emanating balance and wisdom and you will have the strongest understanding that there is no force in this universe that acts alone.”At once, Caius could feel… everything. His senses expanded far beyond anything he had even dared try before. He could see stars born in towering nebulae, feel the vibrations outside the wind in the air, everything. Yozora summoned two new orbs between their hands. A warm brightness radiated from the sapphire orb, and was contrasted with the cool darkness of the ruby orb. Caius reached out for both and felt as they merged into his body, his skin, his bones. He let go of his unknowingly tightly clenched hand, and from it fell a single Sakura petal. It drifted into the churning fabric of reality, and from where it disappeared sprung flourishes of pink, twirling and wrapping around him.Caius fell and crashed into a bed of petals on his stone overlook. The hillside was in full pink bloom. He stood up and breathed in the fresh air. He felt, and was, different. He felt purely radiant. The Divine Kitsune of Eternal Blossom watched as the bright pink petals drifted down to the festival beneath. He smiled. He felt complete.

Lore

An explosion of bright blue and pink burst across the sky to the whoops and cheers of the crowds watching on, as a second, a third, a fourth firework chased one another into the air. The sky was painted with colourful sparks and flares as the height of the Festival of Eternal Twilight danced on. It was famed for both its special circumstance and the fantastic event that took place alongside it. In this small corner of the world, at this time of year, the sun sits on the horizon for three days. A perfect orange semicircle, casting mesmerising pinks and oranges across the cotton clouds.Standing up on the hill, Caius watched from his stone overlook as the highlight of his year continued – as Kitsune of Twilight, it was one of his duties to attend to the festival. This time, he felt he’d outdone himself. As the vibrant firework display painted the sky every colour, he cast his gaze upon the attendees – many dressed in similar stylised and patterned clothes to himself, creating a kaleidoscope of colours on display. He sighed a breath of happiness and relief. They were loving the festival this year. They had many things to do, he could smell the delicious food stalls even from his forested overlook, and while he had been down in the crowds, the people gave their thanks and compliments for the sights and sounds of the festival. Returning his gaze back to the ongoing spectacle in the sky, he allowed himself a smile. Then he curiously narrowed his sapphire eyes at the skies. Something wasn’t quite right. Was it the fireworks? No, it was beyond that. It was in the universe itself. He could just see a ripple growing across it – like a water droplet splashing into the fabric of reality itself. There was no way of telling if it was a friend or foe that appeared from the rift, and the control over the ripple suggested that whoever it was, they were powerful. He summoned his polearm into his hands. His weapon glimmered like sunset and shone with moonlight as he readied himself for whatever was about to emerge from the rift.He dispelled his polearm. His eyes twinkled as he looked upon the one who had passed through. They were draped in long robes woven of night sky, stars winking at Caius, and the centrepiece, the crescent moon, glowing a soft yellow, forever reminiscent of a piece of cheese. Almost more impressive than the robes was their staff, built like the spilling galaxy that Caius loved to stare at on many clear, still nights. He’d met them only once previously – before he took up the mantle of the Kitsune of Twilight. He could never remember what they looked like, but their ultimate distilling and sublime aura was truly unforgettable. He dropped to a knee and bowed his head.“Yozora!” he called out. “To what do I owe the pleasure?” Of all the heavenly beings to arrive at the Festival, the Guardian of the Night Sky had not been one to cross his mind.“On your feet, Caius. We have a lot to discuss,” Yozora replied, their voice echoing to infinity and back, dulcet tones a perfect harmony, beckoning Caius to follow their words. Caius stood back up and looked up to Yozora, mesmerised by whisps of night flickering around Yozora’s gracious form, captivated by their mirror-like eyes that saw all. “I have been watching over you for some time now, Caius,” Yozora said. “So much so, many of the other Gods and Guardians have called you my prodigy.” Yozora chuckled. “Maybe there is some truth in that. But ever since you learned your powers, we have watched. Your abilities are strong, there is no denying that. You walk the line between creation and destruction, for that is the crux of Twilight. The death of the day gone by, the burial of the events of that day, and the birth of the day to come, the celebration of experiences anew.“You have come on to learn these values, and have taken them on as your mantra. You, more so than others, know the importance of your work. And you can throw an excellent festival! You yourself may not realise the number of people who this event positively impacts, the number of good deeds a year inspired by the Festival. Truly, you have done excellently. However, something’s somehow still wrong. You are still bound by the mortality left within you: it tolls your soul to use your gift, more than once we almost lost you to exhaustion. Thus, it has been decided that you will have the opportunity to go beyond, far from where you are now. Will you accept?”Caius stood in awe of the offer. Hearing these words was surreal, it almost felt like a dream. “I- uh,” Caius stuttered, stumbling over the words he spoke. His mind was racing. His eyes were caught in the aethereal abyss of the Guardian’s eyes, and knew that Yozora was right: though he hadn’t thought of it himself, he felt trapped by his limits, both physically and spiritually.“Before you make your decision, you must know that this will come at a cost. You must accept that you will, of your own volition, surrender your powers as you know them. You will no longer be titled as the Kitsune of Twilight. However, you will no longer be bound to the ever-moving Sun and the forever-chasing Moon, and you will be a more powerful force of balance. By accepting this new title, you shall resonate far more deeply with the universe than before, past any limit that light or dark places upon you. Are you willing to make such a sacrifice?”Caius took a long, weighted breath in. Life had been demanding, but it was always worth it. Seeing the children run and laugh down the roads at the Festivals, the numerous souls he guided from the abyss, the mysteries of dark nature that he helped unravel, he would forever cherish his time as the Kitsune of Twilight. However, with new far-reaching powers, he could do so much more. He could not let this opportunity pass him. With a deep, steady breath, he nodded.“I am ready.”“Very well. Join me in the air,” Yozora called. Caius stepped up off the floor, into the sky, and glided up to Yozora. There was a thought that this was the last flight he took as the Twilight Kitsune ebbing at the back of Caius’ mind, and he smiled for it. As he reached Yozora, he felt a soft platform materialise beneath his feet. “We wouldn’t want you to fall out the sky, now, would we?” Yozora chuckled. “Once you are certain, take my hand.” Yozora said, extending a shadowy arm out.Caius reached out and took Yozora’s hand. “Hold your breath,” Yozora told Caius. Almost at once, a bright soft yellow and gentle dark blue aura appeared around Caius, and began to pull outwards, popping off into bubbles of sunset and the early night. The bubbles slipped off Caius, and began to coalesce into one perfect sphere, the encapsulation of Twilight. Yozora raised their free hand and curled it into a fist, and the Twilight disappeared.Caius dropped to the floor and coughed, not letting go of Yozora’s hand. He knew the hardest was still yet to come, and shakily got back to his feet again. Caius watched as Yozora’s other hand offered itself to him. He gratefully took it, and, without a word, readied himself for the next step.“With your strength anew, you shall become a symbol far beyond power,” Yozora stated. “You will be the shining beacon emanating balance and wisdom and you will have the strongest understanding that there is no force in this universe that acts alone. All forces cannot exist alone and only work to find the equilibrium.”Caius’ hair stood on end. The air felt electric, and he could sense… everything, around him. And further. He could feel the steps of the ladybug on a leaf beneath them, the soft rumble of the Sun burning in the sky, and the breeze sway the verdant trees all around. As he stood with Yozora, he slowly became more aware of the universe beginning to stretch and bend around them. Yozora let go of Caius’ hands and began to pace around him.Yozora clasped their hands together and after a moment brought them apart again. Between Yozora’s hands were two twin orbs, one of shining sapphire and the other of radiant ruby, slowly orbiting each other. Yozora raised their arms high above their head and Caius watched as the orbs began to circle closer and closer to him. They stopped either side of him. Caius looked to both of them, seeing the bright light emanating from the blue orb, and the cool darkness of the red orb. He reached out for both. The orbs seeped into his hands, his arms, and he was one with them. He could feel the universe ripple with the new power. He could see all. From the birth of new stars within towering nebulae, to the eternal spin of galaxies. He saw a wildfire burn through a forest, threatening a town. He saw the townspeople unify, and work collectively to protect against the fires, evacuating the vulnerable, their firefighters working to control the inferno. He could watch as a pink bud grew, flower with tender beauty, and watch as the petals floated down in a pink procession.Still feeling the universe swirling around him, Caius looked down to his clenched hand. He hadn’t realised how tightly he was gripping it and let go. From his hand fell a single Sakura blossom. It drifted into the churning fabric of reality and disappeared. Giant bursts and flourishes of soft pink danced around Caius, rushing through and around him from where the petal had fallen. He felt the warm tones of the pink twirl and wrap around him, slowly encasing him entirely. He felt it merge with his skin, his flesh, his bones. He opened his eyes, and the world shattered around him, shards reflecting glimpses of worlds across the universe. He had sights of blooming fields, crashing waves and… himself. He had striking scarlet and sapphire eyes; ones that could stare like infinity and had warmth like a happy ending. Eyes that greeted darkness and welcomed light. His left eye, the ruby, had a seeming eternal depth and smouldered with darkness. His right, the sapphire, sparked with life and glowed with the light. His dark hair was now graced with the very same pink of the blossoms and matched by his tail. He saw, now orbiting around him, his necklace, now made of crystals like a bright summer sky on a warm blue sea.Caius thudded to the ground, cushioned by a small pile of petals. He breathed in the cool air. He felt different. He was different. Caius dreamily got up off the ground. He had landed on his overlook. The sun had begun its slow descent from the horizon and still shone brilliantly. He felt purely radiant. The Divine Kitsune of Eternal Blossom watched as the bright pink petals drifted down to the festival beneath. He smiled. He felt complete.

Thank you
A massive thank you to Tirek3178, ShatteredChrystal, Wandinii and MesianVelari for being absolute gems during the process, putting up with my constant requests for opinions, my breakdowns, my stress, my constant waffle on the subject.
Lastly, a huge thank you to everyone, for being so patient for my return with Caius NextGen and for the constant support throughout my streaming journey. Without every single one of you, I couldn't do this and I appreciate everything.
